BACKGROUND ON MENTAL DISABILITIES
Mental disabilities are long term impairments. Typically associated with a braindamage. The most common cause is the result of genetic conditions. The brains of these people do not function properly. These include such conditions as Down's syndrom, cerebral pansly, in old peopl conditions similar to dementia and retardation (extremly now cognitive function inability to think). These people's IQ is normally low.
Mental illnesses are conditions usually unrelated to IQ or physical imparement but they are still disabling. Some are short term episodes from which you can recover, others endure the condition throughout one's life. Some are result of hereditary predisposition (schisophrenia), others could be triggered by trauma, accident, drugs. Common mental illnesses include: depression, which in extreme cases can be life threatening but it can be effectively treated, manic depressions (bipolar mood disorder) characterised by periods of mania followed by periods of depression. It can be effectively controlled with drugs; Anxiety disorders characterised by persistent feelings of high anxiety including panic attacks can be quite effectively treated. Eating disorders – anorexia, bulimia, obsessive eating can one overcome it with treatment but life long.
Asperger's syndrome
It is a mild form of autism. Unlike classic low functioning autism whose victims often suffer from mental retardation and are unable to function independently, Asperger's children have normal or even higher IQ – high functioning autism. The disorder is more common in boys than girls, generally diagnosed by the age of 5-9. it's a life long condition and there's no cure. Individuals with Asperger's have major impairment of social interaction skills. They tend to be smart and have good verbal abilities, but they have troubles understanding emotions and relations. Nonverbal queues contact and touching, they often have difficulty with sensory processing (dealing with sights, sounds, other stimuly that we take for granted). They experience overload quite easily. All this cause real suffering (school is a nightmare – seen as freaks and are being bullied, family has a difficult relation, have no friends – live in a private world of fantasy and imaginations, quite exotic interests and often of scientific or tehnical nature, brilliant at maths and computers, obsessed with numbers and order). If their rutines are disrupted or are threatened with new situation, they can become panic stricken or angry. Although life is difficult for them, they have jobs and live satisfactory life. What needs to be done; because with the stigma many people with illness are in dowke jeopardy (?). first they have to endure their condition, and second, they have to put up with the fear of mockery of others. Some common misconceptions: dangerous (not really, they use self-defence), they got that way because of drugs, they can cure themselves, these people should be locked away for their safety and to keep the community safe, this peopl are doomed to be that way for life.
