“It was true that I didn’t have much ambition, but there ought to be a place for people without ambition, I mean a better place than the one usually reserved. How in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 6:30 a.m. by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, dress, force-feed, shit, piss, brush teeth and hair, and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so?” (Charles Bukowski)

POZOR!

Researchers Issue Stronger Guidelines for Preventing Cancer

June 9, 2014

tofu-pho.jpg

A group of researchers has recommended applying the precautionary principle to food choices that probably, if not conclusively, increase cancer risk as shown in a recent report in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. The precautionary principle is typically applied to toxins that are likely harmful to health, but where evidence is not yet complete.

The researchers conclude that based on this approach, it’s best to limit or avoid alcohol, dairy products, red and processed meat products, and meats cooked at high temperatures. Conversely, they encourage the consumption of soy products, fruits, and vegetables.

Gonzales JF, Barnard ND, Jenkins DJ, et al. Applying the precautionary principle to nutrition and cancer. J Am Coll Nutr. Published ahead of print May 28, 2014.

While more research is needed in this area, we now have a set of six precautionary principles to reduce the risk of occurrence:

1) Avoid dairy products to reduce risk of prostate cancer.

2) Limit or avoid alcohol to reduce the risk of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, colon, rectum, and breast.

3) Avoid red and processed meat to reduce the risk of cancers of the colon and rectum.

4) Avoid grilled, fried, and broiled meats to reduce the risk of cancers of the colon, rectum, breast, prostate, kidney, and pancreas.

5) Women should consume soy products in adolescence to reduce risk of breast cancer. Breast cancer survivors should consume soy products to reduce risk of cancer recurrence and overall mortality.

6) Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to reduce risk of several forms of cancer.

Processed Meat Linked to Heart Failure

Processed meats can double your risk of dying of heart failure, according to a new study published in the American Heart Association's journal Circulation: Heart Failure.

Researchers followed the diets of 37,035 men for almost 12 years as part of the Cohort of Swedish Men study.

For each 50 gram serving of processed meat, about the size of a regular hot dog, heart failure risk increased by 8 percent, and the chances of dying from heart failure increased by 38 percent.

Read more about processed meat here.

Cultured meat: every village its own factory?

Rising global demand for meat will result in increased environmental pollution, energy consumption, and animal suffering. Cultured meat, produced in an animal-cell cultivation process, is a technically feasible alternative lacking these disadvantages, provided that an animal-component-free growth medium can be developed. Small-scale production looks particularly promising, not only technologically but also for societal acceptance. Economic feasibility, however, emerges as the real obstacle.

SCIENCE - APRIL 24, 2014

Eating less meat delivers big climate benefits

If the whole population of the European Union were to halve its consumption of meat, dairy produce and eggs, greenhouse gas emissions would go down by 25 to 40 percent. What is more, 23 percent less land would be needed for food production, say researchers from Alterra and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL).

If Europeans just halved their meat consumption, this would already yield great environmental benefits. It would also significantly cut water and air pollution as well as the incidence of cardiovascular disease, write the researchers in the journal Global Environmental Change. Using biophysical models, they calculated the consequences for the climate, the environment and public health of halving the consumption of animal products in the European diet and replacing them with plant-based alternatives. Along with Jan Peter Lesschen, Susanne Wagner and Oene Oenema of Alterra and first author Henk Westhoek of the PBL, British, Italian and German researchers contributed to the research as well.

Soya

The researchers also concluded that eating half as much meat would cut nitrogen emissions by 40 percent. It would also enable Europe to become an exporter of grains and to cut soya imports by 75 percent

The climate benefits gained by halving meat consumption came out as bigger than the researchers had expected, says researcher Jan Peter Lesschen. He notes that a drop in meat consumption would have a bigger impact on the climate that all kinds of technical and agronomic measures in the agriculture sector. All these steps towards sustainable farming methods can probably deliver a 30 percent reduction in greenhouse gases at the most.

The research was carried out by a European expert group in the field of nitrogen and food (EPNF), which aims to inform policymakers and consumers about the impact of food on the environment and public health.

Še en bistroumen članek o škodljivosti fruktoze iz sadja: KLIK

Spisan seveda s strani 'strokovnjakinje'.
